How We Build a Pond

Step #1: Preparation

Our process initiates with a thorough property survey, assessing the perfect location of a pond and waterfall for that pond based on the placement of other features within that landscape and the best viewpoint. Following this assessment, we mark out the designated area for the pond and create a plan for the size, placement of waterfall and skimmer at opposing ends, and what is required to build up the area.

Step #2: Excavation

We excavate in stages for the shelves based on the desired depth of the pond. Typically that means a three foot deep shelf, a two foot deep shelf, and a one foot deep shelf. In addition to that, we also need to plan excavation and the building up of the berm / stream for the waterfall area of the pond. This ensures that your waterfall is elevated above the pond and we can get the desired sound from the crashing water.

Step #3: Pond Liner

A non-woven geotextile is added to the base of the pond excavation followed by the pond liner. The non-woven geotextile protects the pond liner while the pond liner holds the water in the pond. If necessary, we excavate beyond the pond for drainage purposes so that no water gets trapped under the pond liner.

Step #4: Building the Pond

Natural stone is placed on top of the pond liner to create a natural effect for the pond while the waterfall and skimmer are placed on opposing ends of the pond with the waterfall placed higher than the skimmer and a pipe is plumbed in between the two. The waterfall is framed in with natural stone and any final touches are added to the pond including plants, lighting, and fish if purchased.

Step #8: Finalize

The final touches are added including topsoil and any plantings around the pond that are included. You are now ready to enjoy your pond!
